What is a Truepic
Introduction
A Truepic is a digital photo you can trust. You can feel confident it is an original, unedited photo, that contains real, authentic metadata. And since a Truepic’s content, including all accompanying metadata, is protected by a tamper-evident seal, there will be evidence of any alteration or mutation that occurs after it’s captured.
For a more technical definition, a Truepic is a digital photo file create by Truepic’s secure, controlled capture camera software on a trustworthy device. A Truepic’s pixels directly represent the photons that struck an image sensor at the point of capture; it contains specific, verified metadata; and the resulting file has signed provenance data included to indicate the file has not been tampered with.
What does all of that look like, and how do you gain access to those protected details? A Truepic looks like a standard JPEG:

Embedded in that JPEG is something that makes it more than just a JPEG: a custom APP11 segment that contains sealed data. The JPEG is now a self-authenticating, verified Truepic. The tamper-evident data, along with our post-capture computer vision analysis, aims to confirm the following three things about a Truepic:
- The pixels are as captured by the device’s sensor. They have not been mutated in any way.
- The metadata associated with the photo is accurate and verified. It has not been spoofed in any way.
- That photo is an original. It is not repurposed, rebroadcast, or recaptured.
To extract all of that underlying data, and to take advantage of Lens’ suite of post-capture processing services, you’ll utilize the Lens API. The results are returned as JSON, and can optionally contain each of the detailed sections that follow.

Trusted Certificate Details
The verified details within every Truepic are “signed” with a key and a corresponding certificate using a system called public key infrastructure (PKI). This certificate has been issued by Truepic’s Certificate Authority, which ladders up to Truepic’s trusted Root. This Certificate Authority, and our use of PKI not only ensures that the chain is secure, but it also provides specific details that can be referred to when viewing a Truepic. Specifically, every Truepic will provide the following details about the certificate:
- Issuer Name - This is the name of Truepic’s specific Certificate Authority
that issued, or signed, this certificate.
- Organization - This is the name of the parent organization that owns this
mobile app. This is your company as provided to Truepic when onboarding.
- Orginzational Unit - This is the name of the specific organizational unit,
division, or application that owns this mobile app. This is the name
asprovided to Truepic when onboarding.
- Name - This is the “name” (CN, Common Name) of this specificcertificate.
This is not a unique name, but it does contain specific details about the Lens
SDK and it’s version, as well as the mobile app and it’s version.
- Valid From & Valid To - These combined form the “validity window” of
this specific certificate. When a certificate issued by a Truepic Certificate
Authority, it has a limited amount of time is can be used. For a Truepic to be
“valid”, the protected data must have been signed (and ideally timestamped)
within that time frame.

Verified, Trustworthy Metadata
These results, which are collectively called assertions within a Truepic file
and JSON response, include original pixels, time, date, location, device make
and model, and an original thumbnail to refer back to in the event additional
C2PA compliant edits have been performed after the point of
capture.

Geocoded Location
These results include the capture address, which has been geocoded from the verified latitude and longitude sealed in the file.

Recapture Detection
Also known as picture of picture, these results include our top level analysis output, as well as various additional scores that can be used to enhance any internal algorithms you have pre-built.
Here is a sample of an image that “Passed” (no signs of recapture detected):

Here is a sample of an image that is flagged as a Recapture:

- Status - The status is Truepic’s string based result of our analysis. The
possible values are:
“Pass” - recapture not detected. This is likely an original photo.
“Recapture” - this is a picture of a picture on a screen. Review to determine whether this is a nefarious attempt at capturing a picture of another picture.
“Warning” - There is a screen within this photo. Review to determine whether this is a picture of a screen, or if it is a nefarious attempt at capturing a picture of a picture on a screen.
“Blurry” - This photo was too blurry to analyze, it must be manually reviewed.
“Low Entropy” = This photo likely had an issue with the capture. E.g. a finger was placed over the lens. - Blur Score - We also return the raw “blur” score for you to utilize within your own analysis if you choose. We flag a photo as blurry if the value is below 40. The range of possible values is 0-3000.
- Entropy Score - We also return the raw “entropy” score for you to utilize within your own analysis if you choose. We flag a photo as low entropy if the value is below 0.02. The range of possible values is ~ 0-2.0.
- Recapture Score - We also return the raw “recapture” score for you to utilize within your own analysis if you choose. We flag a photo as a recapture if it exceeds 0.5. The possible values are 0 through 1.0. Our “warning” flag is based on a secondary analysis that determines whether or not the photo contains indications of a screen.
- Shutter Speed - Finally, we return the camera’s shutter speed when capturing the image.
Image Search
Also known as reverse image search, these results display whether or not an exact match was found across the internet if one can be identified. Here is a sample where a match was found:

- Status - The status is Truepic’s string based result of our analysis. The
possible values are:
“No Match” - we did not find a match across the internet. Please note, heavily cropped captures, or photos captured in drastically different lighting conditions may not return a result even if a known match exists.
“Match” - we found a match across the internet. Truepic has whittled the results down to the single most likely actual match. If a match is found, the URL of the match will also be returned.
Text Detection
Also known as optical character recognition, these results display any identified strings throughout the photo, as well as the location within the photo where they were found.

Object Detection
These results are broken into two parts.
-
Object localization shows specific objects found, as well as the location within the photo where they are found.

-
Label detection shows more specific labels that may apply to the various objects within the photo, but it does not include the specific location of each.

Putting it All Together
The API allows you to request some or all of those sections by specifying which
options you’d like to include (by default, all options are included). By
including all available options, the Truepic at the top of the page returns
the following full JSON response, which is full of valuable data:

What is C2PA?
C2PA, or the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, is a group of organizations that have come together to create an open technical standard that provides the ability to trace the origin and history of different types of media, including photos and videos. The goal of the standard is to create a model for interoperability between software creators that allows media files to retain and display tamper evident data as the file is transferred from one place to another. Truepic is a founding steering committee member of C2PA along with Adobe, Microsoft, Arm, BBC, Intel, and Twitter. All Truepics captured with the Lens SDK will conform to the C2PA format, ensuring interoperability for all software that adopts the standard into the future.
How does that impact you?
C2PA is a recognized standard for sealing the verified, accurate data Truepic has gathered at the point of capture into the JPEG file. Lens’ proprietary controlled capture process ensures that the inputs into the file are true, and the C2PA standard ensures that the file output remains in tact, with a traceable history over time. As C2PA is further adopted, the verified data sealed within every photo and video captured with the Lens SDK will be recognized and utilized by more and more third-party tools over time. By having C2PA compliant Truepics as a foundational element of your infrastructure, you are ensuring that your media is built for a future of authenticity-based software tools.
